Acceleration vs. Velocity in Business: Are You Cruising or Taking Off?
I’m always thrilled when the plane I’m on takes off!! The engines begin to roar, and off we go! There’s always that moment of tension — when the plane barrels down the runway, faster and faster, until suddenly the wheels leave the ground. I’m airborne!
That moment isn’t about speed alone. It’s about acceleration. And that same distinction matters in how we run our businesses.
Velocity: Cruising Speed
Velocity is speed with direction. In a plane, it’s the 500 miles per hour that keeps you on course to your destination. In your company, it’s business as usual: revenue growth, sales pipeline, your customer satisfaction, expense management, etc.
Velocity feels good. It looks impressive in the financials. It gives us a sense of control and progress. But here’s the hard truth: once you’ve hit a certain speed, velocity simply sustains. It keeps you moving — but it doesn’t mean you’re improving.
Acceleration: The Takeoff
Acceleration is different. It’s the surge of change that happens when velocity increases. It’s the engines pushing harder, the nose of the plane lifting, and that moment when you realize you’re no longer bound by the runway.
In business, acceleration has a compounding effect — you move forward faster and better. It’s when sales multiply faster, when every month outpaces the last, when your systems begin to scale without the pain of growth. Acceleration is what gets you moving to a new altitude.
The Trap We Fall Into
Here’s the vulnerable part: many of us — myself included — mistake velocity for acceleration. We get busy, the numbers look steady, and we think, “We’re doing great.” But cruising speed can be deceptive. It feels like success, but it might just be inertia dressed up in metrics.
And I’ll be honest — velocity is comfortable. It’s safe. It’s predictable. Acceleration, on the other hand, asks us to take risks. It asks us to add fuel to the engines, to believe the climb is worth the pressure, and to lean into the discomfort of change.
Velocity keeps us moving. Acceleration lifts us to new heights.
Why It Matters
If we only measure success by how fast we’re going, we risk missing whether we’re actually climbing. Velocity without acceleration is like circling the sky without ever ascending. You’re still flying, but you’re not going anywhere new.
Acceleration is what challenges us. It’s where courage lives. It’s where innovation and resilience show up.
An Invitation
So maybe the question isn’t just: How fast are we going?
Maybe the deeper question is: Do we have the courage to take off? To push past cruising speed and climb to the next altitude?
Because when we do, business stops being about checking boxes or hitting safe targets. It becomes about momentum, and creating something more than its past.
Reflection Questions for You and Your Team
- Where in our business are we simply “cruising” — maintaining speed but not really improving?
- What would acceleration look like for us? Where could we build momentum that multiplies our effort?
- What risks or changes do we need to embrace to move from comfort (velocity) into growth (acceleration)?
We are very good at helping you ask tough questions like this. So call us if we can help you ACCELERATE!!
